How to have your dream wedding without going broke!!!

If you work a steady job and been saving up for a wedding, or even thinking of having the ‘big wedding’ this blog is going to be useful for you. You don’t want to get married and go broke after the wedding so I’m sharing these tips on how to have your dream wedding without breaking the bank!

According to TheKnot.com The Average national wedding cost in the U.S. has soared to $35,329!!
But Remember, this cost is just an average, so depending on where you are the cost could be twice as much or half the cost!
The average wedding cost for northern New Jersey (where I had my wedding) is $47,868. You can get a more detailed breakdown’s by state from this article.

The Knot Real Weddings Study 2016 infographic
My wedding guest count was at 200 guests adults and children.
And my wedding cost came in at 14,000 (more than I planned to spend but just some things I refused to compromise on) but don’t worry I‘ll tell you how to avoid this mistake.
I’m going to show you my wedding numbers using the national average of 140 guest because I know 200 is pretty big for a wedding and you just may not have that many people you’d want at your wedding. Ready to take notes????

The Knot Real Weddings Study 2016 infographic
Here’s a breakdown of wedding expenses and you can use it to compare to what I actually spent!
  1. Get you a venue that doesn’t require to take their all inclusive packages!

The venue I chose allowed me to just rent out the space based on the guest count, came in at $20 per guest. So if I use the guest count of 140, I’m spending $2,800 for venue. This venue also offered a ceremony space for $10 a person, but I opted out and went for the traditional church (saved money in the long run). The Biggest hurdle is out the way. There are more affordable venues if you go this route, but I was looking for a more lofty feel. The venue site I used and more details about my other vendors is located in my other blog post, just click here.

  2. Shop around for caterers!

Aim to use more small business restaurants that do catering and are less pricey than the big catering names that you may be used to. Still going with the 140 guest count, my caterer would run me $2,380 for buffet style dinner and $490 for cocktail hour. You can still save more money here, but I ran out of time at the end: you could easily buy your own fruits, vegetables, assorted dips and set that up for cocktail hour. If you find a really good venue, then you can definitely have a potluck style dinner ceremony if you’re doing close family and friends and don’t care to be too fancy. Saves so much money that way! I had way too many guest to go that route, but if you can then go for it!

  3. Now for Open bar or not.

You already booked a venue that’s letting you bring outside food, all you have to do is ASK if you can supply your own liquor! The answer most probably is YES, they’ll just have you sign a liquor liability waiver or get liquor liability insurance (whatever venue you get will tell you what they require). I opted to do a drink station that included mixed drinks, sangria, assorted bottles of wine, and pitchers of fruit water (I got the idea from pintrest!). The liquor and wine were gifted to me by my brother and the pitchers I’ve been buying at Macy’s every time they had a sell! So open bar cost me $0. The below picture is the style of bar service I had at my wedding and you can find the ideas on pinterest where I found them, just click here to go to my Pinterest board for other bar style ideas. A link to the different assorted pitcher I bought is right here. This idea definitely works with non-alcoholic beverages as well!Inspiration Image from Sur La Table

  4. Photography!! Yikes!

Photography can turn out to be the most expensive item on the list! You DO want good photos because after the day is over all you’ll have is the photos as memories! My photographer ran me $3,250 for 2 photographers and 1 videographer for all day services. I did have a more affordable photographer but I fired him (you can read the post here) but it was last minute, I didn’t have time to shop around anymore and I found someone better so I went with them. You can avoid this high expense if you have a friend who is a photographer, which I had but she was my bridesmaid. Or you can rely on your guests to take photos of your ceremony and reception and then go to picture people or JC Penny to take professional photos of you and you bae after all the dust has settled.

  5. Reception Entertainment!

I skipped the band and went for a DJ that I knew would keep the dance floor packed and the guests entertained! Much less expensive than traditional wedding bands and this is a variable expense depending on the DJ you hire so lets put him down at $1,000 for now.

  6. Decor can get pricey but you don’t have to let it! DIY!

Skip the flowers and go for some other form of centerpieces! I was going for a particular look and it cost me per table so I opted to have 10 tables of 20 guest, so if I go with my 140 guest count I would only need to decorate 7 tables so that would come to about $1,000. Trust me that’s a pretty good price, and I could’ve come way under that price but I was hell bent the romantic candle lit lantern look! This definitely could be way more affordable, just enlist the help of friends and family, and gather items you already own and get creative!! It’ll cost you more time and less money but it’ll be worth it!

Using these numbers, IF I had a guest count of 140, my wedding expenses come down to $10,920 which is pretty good and way below the national and regional average! I’ve seen some venues that cost that price alone, so I’d be pretty happy with that!

That’s the bulk of the wedding expenses. Rings, transportation, dress, wedding cake, favors, invitations, honeymoon: those are all variable expenses which can range you from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on how you plan it! If you want a more detailed count to save the most money, I have no problem sharing that with you guys, just let me know! If you had a wedding that came below the averages, share some tips in the comments to help some one else out!

Until Next time guys….

Food crafted by V Cuisine that is still being complimented to this day! His food blended Haitian culture with American cuisine, and his wait staff was impeccable!

I made the best decision in choosing DJ OK as my wedding entertainment because he was just AWESOME and kept everyone on their feet!

And the MVP award goes to Thee MLLE!!! she was out with me EVERY Saturday getting wedding items, at IKEA buying centerpieces, teaching me my first dance 3 days before the wedding! I love her and definitely ready to repay the favor when her time comes!

Last minute target makeup haul

Yesterday I was invited to a Holiday party,  and at the last minute I received the memo that it was an ugly sweater party but I was already out for the day only dressed in a tshirt and jeans as per usual. So last minute I make a run to target and they have no more ugly sweaters, so I decided I should dress up my face instead.

Since it was last minute, and just needed the makeup for the one night, I didn’t want to spend a fortune on makeup! My total was about $36 most of that went to the lipsticks which were about $6 a piece thanks to my indecisiveness 🙃

I got the following:

  • Maybeline fit me foundation in color Mocha which I already own and love!
  • Maybeline cholosal lash mascara which really made my lashes look thicker so I love for the last minute buy
  • Elf eyeliner pen…ehhh with this I pretty much got what I paid for, but it did the job
  • Elf full face brush…wasn’t really the best for applying foundation but did the job
  • NYX butter lipstick in color Moonlit Night …this feels so smooth and buttery on my lips and it’s a nice deep wine color perfect for the holiday season
  • NYX lingerie liquid lipstick in color Ruffle Trim….I’m a darker girl and I would love a nude color lipstick but it never works out, this one was too light for me
  • NYX lingerie liquid lipstick in color Teddy…This one blended in with my complexion so it seemed like my lips were camflauged lol

Just so you can see what the lipstick colors looked like on me I’ve added swatches.

I always thought swatches were silly until now lol they really put stuff in perspective. And you can really see how the color teddy just blended in with my complexion. I’m not really a big make up girl, but when I find something I like I tend to stick to it. With that being said I love the NYX butter lipstick and I would definitely get more if I find a color I like.

If anyone can suggest a great looking nude lipstick/lip gloss I would love to try it out because that’s the look I’ll be going for on my wedding day! As for the other 2 liquid lipsticks I’ll be giving them to my friend Yvana, you’ve probably seen her YouTube page Thee Mademoiselle, the only make up she wears is lipstick so if she doesn’t have these colors they’re hers!

Until next time guys….

Where To Get The Best Wedding Invitations!

Weddings are expensive!!! There’s no reason to spend extra unnecessary money when you can opt for more affordable options!

There are so many online vendors that produce wedding invites to match whatever wedding theme you have without breaking the bank! If you know what you’re into, just jump right in and get shopping for your save the dates and invites! If you’re not quite so sure, start off by ordering a FREE sample kit to see some of the possibilities!

SpoonfulOfDia-Wedding Paper Divas- 02

I chose to use Wedding Paper Divas! They have so many beautiful templates and different styles to choose from! And there’s always some sort of promotion going on to help alleviate the cost so that’s always a plus!

SpoonfulOfDia-Wedding Paper Divas-05.png

I opted for an all in one invite so I wouldn’t need to purchase RSVP cards, envelopes and inserts (I’m trying to save money here lol). Because invites weren’t one of my top priorities when budgeting, I didn’t see a reason to spend a lot of money on them. So what is an all in one invite? It’s exactly what it says! Invite, Response card, and the accompanying envelope, all you have to do is fold it! (It’s actually really simple to assemble and comes with fool proof directions).

This is what my invites look after it’s folded

There are unlimited options once you take the time to do the customization, you can change paper thickness (which I would’ve loved to play with), paper finishing and unlimited color options. If You’re the creative type (which I am not) then you can definitely upload your own template!! Don’t forget, Favors, Accessories, Reception Activities, all available at wedding star for wedding paper divas!

Wedding Paper Divas is definitely the one stop shop for your wedding paper products! They even offer address printing options but I opted to print my own labels at home (to save money lol) using Klassy Kinks’ template. You get to directly print on your envelopes, read her blog to get the full directions.

SpoonfulOfDia-Klassy Kinks Template

After you select your template and fill in the necessary information, just review your product and order! If you picked a customized order like I did, you will be sent a proof to approve or make changes, they really aim to get you the perfect product! This was the easiest part of wedding planning because everything was all in one location! Give it a try and let me know what you think, or if you used a different vendor, share so others can know!

Until next time guys….

Test Drive your Vendors! – it’s not optional!

Hey Guys!

I’m coming to you with an informational post today. I’m getting closer and closer to my wedding date and there are just a few things I’ve learned along the way that I want to share with you (and I rather share these thing sooner rather than later for those of you wedding planning as well).

Your vendors are all booked but the selection process does not end there, the selection process only ends after you test drive your vendors and establish a certain level of trust!

While planning my wedding, I tried to keep costs low by booking small businesses, unconventional wedding venues, or booking vendors from referrals. So how do you vet out which vendors are reliable to work with? You have to go off reputation, reviews and prior experience; that may work for regular day to day business but your wedding day is special and you want everything to go as smoothly as possible. You want to test out your vendors to make sure they care as much about your event as you do and not just another source of income coming through the door!

Spoonfulofdia-photographer1
WHY

Your wedding day is special and is a once in a lifetime event! So to ensure the ease and a stress free event the day of, then be sure to test drive all your vendors!  You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it, so don’t risk the success of your event on just the “word” or “trust” in a vendor! Unless you’ve used that vendor or company before, give them a try! It’s important to get a feel for who you are working with, the last thing you want is to be stressed about someone who’s providing important services for you on your big day!!! I learned this the hard way after trying out my photographer during my engagement shoot (I’ll go into details of this experience in a later post).

Unless you have worked with this vendor before or you’ve seen them in action at other events, just try them out! Trying out the vendor will either make you have an overwhelming sense of excitement for the event day (that’s how I felt when I chose Jean Ralph Thurin to design my dress), or it will make you reconsider working with them (I also had this experience too). Sometimes there’s a separate cost associated with trying your vendor but don’t let that deter you from doing a trial run; but don’t forget sometimes it’s including in the package when you book the vendor, give it a try and don’t regret it later. From makeup to cake to photographer, caterer and dj, there’s always a way to try them out!

Let me know if you’ve ever had a hard time booking a vendor before and how you delt with it!

Happy Planning!
